A browser-based crawler — nothing to install
Screaming Frog is a desktop application: you download it, install it, configure a crawl, and run it locally. That's genuinely powerful — but it also means software you can't always install (work laptops and Chromebooks often block it), a setup step, and a learning curve before you see a single result.
SeoSitemap.app does the common 80% — a sitemap-level on-page audit — without any of that. Paste your sitemap.xml and it pulls every URL and checks each page's H1–H6 heading structure, title and meta description, canonical tag, HTTP status, time-to-first-byte, and duplicate H1s and titles across the whole site. Up to 500 pages, free, no signup — and because the scan runs in your browser, your data never touches our servers.
SeoSitemap vs Screaming Frog: an honest comparison
We're not going to pretend we replace Screaming Frog for everything — it's an excellent tool. Here's where each one fits:
- Installation. Screaming Frog is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. SeoSitemap runs in any browser — nothing to download, nothing to update.
- Free limit. Both are free up to around 500 URLs. Screaming Frog removes the cap on its paid licence; we cap every run at 500 pages to stay fast and free.
- Setup. Screaming Frog asks you to configure and launch a crawl. With us you paste a sitemap URL and the audit starts — results in seconds.
- Depth. Screaming Frog wins here: JavaScript rendering, custom extraction, crawl configuration, scheduling and integrations. We deliberately focus on the on-page sitemap audit rather than a fully configurable crawler.
- Privacy. Both keep your data local — Screaming Frog because it's a desktop app, SeoSitemap because the scan executes in your browser and nothing is stored on our side.
- Output. We give you a sortable, filterable results table with one-click CSV and HTML export, and a link you can share with a teammate who doesn't have any software installed.
When Screaming Frog is the better choice
Reach for Screaming Frog (or another paid crawler) when you need to crawl well beyond 500 URLs, render JavaScript-heavy single-page apps, extract custom data with XPath/CSS selectors, schedule recurring deep audits, or wire crawling into a larger workflow. For serious, repeated technical SEO on large sites, a dedicated desktop crawler earns its keep.
When SeoSitemap is the better choice
Use SeoSitemap when you want an answer now, not a setup project:
- You can't install software. Locked-down work machine, Chromebook, or a borrowed computer — the browser is all you need.
- It's a quick, one-off audit. Check a site's heading and meta hygiene in 30 seconds without learning a new tool.
- You're hunting duplicates. The audit groups identical H1s and titles across every page, so keyword cannibalisation jumps straight out.
- You're sharing with non-technical people. Send a client or teammate a link and an exported report — no install required on their end.
Start with the sitemap checker above, or jump to the bulk meta tags checker if titles and descriptions are your focus.
